How to Spend 3 Days in Luxor, Egypt: Full Plan, Budget and Practical Tips from a Local
The Nile splits Luxor into two very different sides: the East Bank, with the main town, Luxor Temple and Karnak, and the West Bank, home to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and many ancient burial sites. Three days gives you time to see the highlights without rushing.
At a glance
Luxor in Brief
Luxor is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Egypt if you love history, ancient temples and the stories behind them. Here is everything you need to know before you plan.
Ideal Stay
3 full days.
Best Time
Roughly November to March, for more comfortable sightseeing weather.
Where to Stay
East Bank for convenience and restaurants. West Bank for a quieter, more local feel.
Main Areas
The East Bank and the West Bank, split by the Nile.
Do Not Miss
Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and a sunrise balloon ride.
Getting Around
Walk the central East Bank, take the local ferry, and book a driver or tour for the West Bank.
Getting there
How to Get to Luxor
You can reach Luxor by air, train, bus or Nile cruise from Cairo. The best option depends on where you are coming from, how much time you have and whether you want the journey itself to be part of the experience. Compare the full journey cost, not just the ticket.
By plane
Fly via Cairo
If you are coming from outside Egypt, you probably will not find a direct flight to Luxor. Almost all routes go through Cairo: fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI), then take a domestic flight to Luxor Airport (LXR). If you are already in Egypt, you can fly direct to Luxor from Cairo, Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.
By train
The Overnight Sleeper
Take the overnight sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor. It is a private cabin with beds, simple but safe, and a good option if you do not want to fly.
Travel time: 12 to 15 hours. It leaves in the evening and arrives in Luxor in the morning.
By bus
The Budget Survival Option
Buses run from Cairo to Luxor, but the ride is very long and can get uncomfortable. There are no toilets onboard and stops are limited.
Travel time: 12 to 15 hours.
By Nile cruise
Cruise Between Cities
Cruises are a beautiful way to experience Upper Egypt. Most run between Luxor and Aswan, but some extended routes start from Cairo. Those are rare and expensive. Mövenpick is the best option for quality and service, though it is not the only one.
From the airport or station
Prebook a Private Taxi
Before you arrive, confirm your hotel’s location and ask whether it offers a pickup. I highly recommend prebooking a private taxi, because airport taxis are very expensive.
When to go
Best Time to Visit Luxor
Luxor is not just hot, it is desert hot. The kind of heat that makes you question all your life choices by 11 AM. That is why the best time to visit is from November to March, when the weather is finally on your side. Expect sunny days, cooler evenings, and temperatures perfect for temple hopping without melting into the sand.
Where to stay
Where to Stay in Luxor: East Bank or West Bank?
The key decision is whether you prefer convenience or a quieter atmosphere. The East Bank is the easiest base for restaurants, the town centre, Luxor Temple, Karnak access and transport connections. The West Bank feels quieter and more local, with guesthouses close to many of the tombs and temples. You can stay on either side and cross the Nile by ferry or road when needed.
I personally prefer the East Bank because it is quieter and more local. Here are three hotels I have tried and recommend, for different budgets.
$ · Budget
Moon House of Luxor
A hotel I personally tried and recommend.
$$ · Mid-range
Jolie Ville Hotel and Spa Kings Island
A hotel I personally tried and recommend.
$$$ · Luxury
Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor
A hotel I personally tried and recommend.

How to Get Around Luxor
Do not count on Uber in Luxor, but getting around is still easy.
Cross the Nile
Take the Local Ferry
The best and cheapest way to move between the East Bank and West Bank. It runs every few minutes and costs only 5 EGP.
East Bank
Walk Where You Can
You can walk almost everywhere on the East Bank, especially near Luxor Temple and the Corniche.
Farther sites
Hire a Taxi or Book a Tour
For farther sites like the Valley of the Kings or Hatshepsut Temple, hire a taxi or book a full-day tour, which I highly recommend. I took this one and saw the West and East Bank highlights in one day at a great price. Use code MAYARTRAVELS5 for an extra discount on GetYourGuide.
Day by day
Your 3-Day Luxor Itinerary
East Bank temples, West Bank tombs and one long day trip. Pick a day to jump straight to it.
Day 1 · East Bank
Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the East Bank
Start early with Karnak, before the heat peaks, and finish with Luxor Temple when the lighting changes.

- By car or tour

- Karnak Temple · 600 EGP
- Luxor Temple · 500 EGP
- Avenue of Sphinxes · check access locally
- Mummification Museum · 220 EGP
- Sofra Restaurant · dinner
- Corniche and a felucca at sunset
What to Do at Each Stop
Karnak Temple: one of Luxor’s essential ancient sites. Give yourself time to explore the vast complex and its columns rather than rushing through. Going earlier helps you avoid the strongest heat. I highly suggest a private tour so you do not have to hustle through transportation.
Luxor Temple: after a break, visit Luxor Temple. It can be especially atmospheric later in the day, when the lighting changes. If you have the energy, look into the Avenue of Sphinxes route connecting the temple area toward Karnak, but check current access and ticket arrangements locally first.
Mummification Museum: smaller than the major complexes, so it can fit into the day if opening hours and your energy allow. A good pick if you are interested in ancient Egyptian burial practices. Check opening hours before you go.
The Corniche: if you still have time, walk along the Corniche by the Nile and take a felucca through sunset. Do not just book when you get there, because you will most likely get scammed. Book through GetYourGuide and use code MAYARTRAVELS5 for an extra discount.
Getting Around
Central East Bank is walkable, especially around Luxor Temple and the Corniche. For the spread-out temples, a private tour or a pre-arranged driver saves time between sites.
Where to Eat
Sofra Restaurant: my pick for dinner. Traditional Egyptian dishes in an old-house setting. Check current hours and the menu before you go.
Practical Tips
Go early, carry water and sun protection, and wear comfortable shoes. Bring a card, because some major sites no longer take cash. A tour with lunch means your operator also handles the transport.

Day 2 · West Bank
Sunrise Balloon Ride and the West Bank’s Ancient Tombs
If you do one thing in Luxor, make it a sunrise balloon ride. Then spend the day among the tombs.

- Sunrise hot-air balloon ride
- Valley of the Kings · 750 EGP, three tombs
- Hatshepsut Temple · 440 EGP
- Valley of the Queens · 220 EGP
- Deir el-Medina · workers’ village, 220 EGP
What to Do at Each Stop
Balloon ride: book it for sunrise with a trusted operator. Flights depend on weather and operational conditions, so keep your schedule flexible and avoid booking a non-refundable activity without understanding the terms.
Valley of the Kings: my absolute favorite thing to see in Luxor, filled with tombs decorated with detailed scenes and colors. A standard ticket covers a limited selection of tombs, and some famous tombs need an extra ticket. My must-sees: KV2, Ramesses IV (included in your standard ticket), KV11, Ramesses III (included), KV62, Tutankhamun (extra) and the Ramesses V and VI tomb (extra).
Hatshepsut Temple: the striking terraced temple built against the cliffs. If you visit without a guide, read a little beforehand so the architecture and history make more sense. Bring water and sun protection, especially around midday.
Valley of the Queens and Deir el-Medina: if time and energy allow, choose one more site, and make it the Valley of the Queens, with tombs of famous queens and princesses. You will see a preserved embryo there! Deir el-Medina, the workers’ village with colorful tombs, is an underrated gem.
Getting Around
The West Bank sites are spread out and hard to reach by public transport. Cross the Nile by ferry (5 EGP) or by road, then hire a driver or book a guided tour.
Where to Eat
Malkata House: a West Bank breakfast option, noted for homemade food and rooftop views. Confirm opening times and whether they accept walk-ins.
After the West Bank, keep the evening easy. If your hotel or guesthouse has a rooftop or Nile view, enjoy it instead of adding another long excursion.
Practical Tips
Bring water and sun protection. A guide is especially important here, so you do not get lost choosing between tombs.
Tickets and entry fees

- Edfu Temple
- Kom Ombo Temple
- Aswan
What to Do at Each Stop
For Day 3, I recommend a full-day trip to Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan. It gives you a chance to experience even more of Egypt’s incredible history in one day. From ancient temples to the different landscapes along the Nile, you will get a deeper feel for the stories and civilizations that shaped this part of the country.

Where to Eat
If you are short on time, book a tour with lunch or dinner, and your tour operator will guide you to a good restaurant.
Practical Tips
You can also combine Luxor and Aswan in one trip. Travel between the two by train, road or Nile cruise. A cruise makes the journey part of the experience, while land transport gives you more control over your schedule.
