Country Overview

Albania is the Balkan coast most people haven’t caught up to yet — Ionian water that rivals Greece at a fraction of the price, Ottoman stone towns folded into the mountains, and a capital reinventing itself one painted building at a time.

Ferries to Corfu, hikes into the Accursed Mountains, byrek for breakfast — it rewards travelers who go slow and skip the highlight-reel itinerary.

  • Capital: Tirana
  • Language: Albanian
  • Currency: Albanian Lek (L)
  • Best time to visit: May–June & September–October
  • Time zone: GMT+1 (GMT+2 in summer)
  • Visa: Visa-free entry for many nationalities, including Egypt, for short tourist stays
City Overview

Tirana doesn’t try to look historic — it’s a loud, colorful, unpolished capital that’s spent the last two decades reinventing itself, from painted communist-era apartment blocks to a skyline of new towers. Most trips into Albania start and end here.

Best time to visit: April–June & September–October, before or after the summer heat

Getting There

  • Tirana International Airport (TIA) — the country’s main gateway
  • Bus/furgon connections from neighboring capitals (Skopje, Podgorica, Pristina)

Getting Around

  • Walkable city center around Skanderbeg Square
  • Taxis and ride-hailing apps for longer hops
  • Furgons (shared minibuses) to other Albanian cities

Where to Stay

  • Blloku — the old communist elite quarter, now bars and cafes
  • Center/Skanderbeg Square — walkable to the main sights
City Overview

Theth sits deep in the Albanian Alps, reachable only by a rough mountain road (or a two-day hike over from Valbonë) — a scattering of stone guesthouses, a famous \”lock-in tower\” from the old blood-feud era, and some of the best hiking in the Balkans.

Best time to visit: June–September, when the mountain roads and trails are clear

Getting There

  • Shared 4×4 furgon from Shkodër (\u00982.5–3 hours on a rough road)
  • Guided hike from Valbonë over the Valbonë Pass (a full day)

Getting Around

  • Everything in the village is walkable
  • Guides for the waterfall, Blue Eye and pass hikes

Where to Stay

  • Village guesthouses — family-run, half-board is standard
  • Book ahead in July–August, rooms are limited
City Overview

Gjirokastër’s stone houses climb a hillside beneath an Ottoman-era hilltop castle, its cobbled streets earning it the nickname “City of a Thousand Steps.” A UNESCO World Heritage town, and one of Albania’s best-preserved.

Best time to visit: April–June & September–October

Getting There

  • Bus from Tirana (~4–5 hours) or Saranda (~1.5 hours)
  • Closest airport is Tirana (TIA)

Getting Around

  • Old town is walkable but steep — comfortable shoes recommended
  • Taxis for the castle or trips further out

Where to Stay

  • Old town — stone houses converted into guesthouses, walk to the castle
City Overview

Saranda is the Albanian Riviera’s main hub — a palm-lined waterfront, a short ferry ride from Corfu, and the jumping-off point for the turquoise coves at Ksamil and the ruins at Butrint.

Best time to visit: June–September for beach weather, May or late September to skip the crowds

Getting There

  • Bus from Tirana (~4 hours) or Gjirokastër (~1.5 hours)
  • Ferry from Corfu, Greece (~30–60 minutes)

Getting Around

  • Bus or taxi south to Ksamil’s beaches
  • Rental car or organized tour to Butrint National Park

Where to Stay

  • Saranda waterfront — restaurants and the promenade
  • Ksamil — quieter, closer to the best beaches
City Overview

Shkodër sits on the edge of a vast lake shared with Montenegro, backed by the mountains that lead up to Theth and Valbonë. It’s a laid-back, bicycle-friendly city and the natural gateway to Albania’s Alps.

Best time to visit: April–June & September–October

Getting There

  • Bus from Tirana (~2 hours)
  • Closest airport is Tirana (TIA)

Getting Around

  • Old town and Rozafa Castle are walkable
  • Furgons north toward Theth and Valbonë

Where to Stay

  • Old town/pedestrian center — close to cafes and the castle
