Country Overview

Sri Lanka packs an entire continent’s worth of scenery into an island you can cross in a day — misty tea-hill trains, ancient rock fortresses, wild-elephant safaris and a south coast lined with surf towns, all a few hours apart.

Stilt fishermen at sunset, hoppers for breakfast, a Buddhist temple around every corner — it rewards a loosely planned two or three weeks more than a tight checklist.

  • Capital: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (Colombo is the commercial capital)
  • Language: Sinhala & Tamil
  • Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (Rs)
  • Best time to visit: December–March for the south & west coast, May–September for the east
  • Time zone: GMT+5:30
  • Visa: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) required for most nationalities, apply online before arrival
City Overview

Colombo is less a destination than a landing pad — a humid, traffic-heavy commercial capital most travelers pass through on the way somewhere else. Give it a day for colonial architecture, street food and a proper introduction to the island before heading out.

Best time to visit: December–March, when the west coast is driest

Getting There

  • Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) — the country’s main gateway

Getting Around

  • PickMe or Uber for getting around the city
  • Tuk-tuks for short hops
  • Trains south along the coast toward Galle

Where to Stay

  • Colombo Fort/Galle Face — central, walkable to the waterfront
  • Just passing through — an airport-area hotel saves the commute
City Overview

Ella is hill-country Sri Lanka at its most photogenic — tea plantations rolling into mist, the Nine Arch Bridge, and one of the most scenic train rides anywhere in Asia bringing you in from Kandy.

Best time to visit: January–March & July–September, for clearer hill-country skies

Getting There

  • Train from Kandy (~6–7 hours, book ahead for the scenic seats)
  • Private car or bus from Colombo (~6–7 hours)

Getting Around

  • Tuk-tuks for Little Adam’s Peak, Nine Arch Bridge and the viewpoints
  • Walking — the main sights are close together

Where to Stay

  • Ella town center — walkable to the train station and cafes
  • Viewpoint guesthouses — a short tuk-tuk ride, better views
City Overview

Sigiriya’s Lion Rock is Sri Lanka’s single most iconic sight — a 5th-century fortress on top of a 200-meter granite outcrop, with frescoes, water gardens and views across the Cultural Triangle from the summit.

Best time to visit: January–March, and climb early to beat both the heat and the crowds

Getting There

  • Private car or bus from Kandy (~3 hours) or Colombo (~4–5 hours)

Getting Around

  • Tuk-tuks between the rock, Dambulla Cave Temple and nearby villages
  • Rental bike for exploring the surrounding countryside

Where to Stay

  • Sigiriya village — closest to the rock, jungle-lodge options nearby
City Overview

Mirissa is the south coast’s classic beach stop — a curved palm-lined bay, whale-watching boats heading out at dawn, and a laid-back strip of beach bars for when the day’s only plan is the hammock.

Best time to visit: November–April, for calm seas and whale-watching season

Getting There

  • Train from Colombo along the coast (~3–4 hours)
  • Private car or bus from Galle (~30–45 minutes)

Getting Around

  • Everything in town is walkable
  • Tuk-tuks to Coconut Tree Hill and nearby beaches

Where to Stay

  • Mirissa beach — steps from the water and the bars
  • Quieter guesthouses set back from the main strip
City Overview

Weligama is where Sri Lanka’s surf scene actually lives — a wide, gentle bay that’s become the island’s learn-to-surf capital, plus the stilt fishermen the south coast is famous for.

Best time to visit: November–April for the best surf conditions

Getting There

  • Train from Colombo along the coast (~3 hours)
  • Private car or bus from Galle (~20 minutes)

Getting Around

  • Walkable along the main bay
  • Tuk-tuks or rental scooter for Mirissa and Ahangama

Where to Stay

  • Weligama Bay — beachfront, walk to the surf schools
City Overview

Ahangama is Weligama’s quieter, more experienced-surfer neighbor — a string of reef breaks, a growing café scene, and fewer crowds than the beaches on either side of it.

Best time to visit: November–April

Getting There

  • Train from Colombo along the coast (~3 hours)
  • Private car or bus from Galle (~20–30 minutes)

Getting Around

  • Rental scooter — the surf breaks are spread along the coast road
  • Tuk-tuks for shorter hops

Where to Stay

  • Along the coast road — surf camps and boutique guesthouses
City Overview

Galle Fort is a walled, cobblestoned slice of Dutch colonial history dropped onto the Indian Ocean — ramparts to walk at sunset, boutique hotels in converted mansions, and the south coast’s best concentration of cafés and galleries.

Best time to visit: December–March

Getting There

  • Train from Colombo (~2.5–3 hours, a scenic coastal ride)
  • Southern Expressway by car (~2 hours from Colombo)

Getting Around

  • Fort is entirely walkable
  • Tuk-tuks for the new town and nearby beaches

Where to Stay

  • Inside Galle Fort — boutique hotels in restored Dutch mansions
City Overview

Unawatuna is the south coast’s classic crescent beach — calm, swimmable water, a lively strip of restaurants right on the sand, and Galle Fort a short tuk-tuk ride away.

Best time to visit: December–March

Getting There

  • Train or car to Galle, then a short tuk-tuk (~10–15 minutes)

Getting Around

  • Walkable along the beach strip
  • Tuk-tuks to Galle Fort and Jungle Beach

Where to Stay

  • Beachfront — steps from the water and restaurants
City Overview

Yala National Park has one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in the world, plus elephants, crocodiles and a coastline of scrub and lagoons — the go-to safari stop for a Sri Lanka itinerary.

Best time to visit: February–June, during the dry season when animals gather at waterholes

Getting There

  • Private car from Ella (~3 hours) or Mirissa (~2.5 hours)

Getting Around

  • Jeep safaris booked through your lodge — the only way into the park

Where to Stay

  • Tissamaharama or camps just outside the park entrance
